Why We Love Working With You – Kamil Tomczyk
1. What do you do at Mood Up?
At Mood Up, I’m an Android Developer currently working on the UK-based IoT project which helps users to keep their homes safe.
2. Do you remember your first days at work? What feelings accompanied you?
I sure do 🙂. I was a little bit excited and immediately focused on what needed to be done. I was received warmly, got a quick introduction to my team and I could calmly settle in and start working on training tasks
3. What did your career path at Mood Up look like?
I started with an internship during which I quickly got familiar with company standards of writing code, got time to learn some new libraries and find out about new ways of application setup and distribution. I’ve learned a lot while working on a pet project and being reviewed by assigned mentors Kris and Piotr.
After that I was given a couple average-size projects to work on. I found it really valuable because I learned various types of approaches, tools and architectures. I also got to take my first steps in work estimation.
Later I moved to the biggest project our company is being part of - smart home application called Sky Protect. I quickly acclimatized in a huge international team and I can honestly say this is by far the project that I’ve learned the most from. I got to use plenty of new technologies, concepts, toolkits and libraries such as Kotlin Coroutines, Flow, Jetpack Compose extensively. I’ve also started to write much cleaner and maintainable code due to the really valuable habit of writing unit tests.
What I really value is also the fact that I was a mentor myself for 3 incredibly talented interns: Klaudia, Damian and Norbert that are now very valuable members of the team. It was a great experience during which I could introduce them to the company, support them and we could teach each other a few things. I’m really proud of every single one of them ;). It was a great opportunity to kind of give it back to the company considering the fact that I couldn't ask for better mentors myself 🙂.
4. What qualities and skills are necessary for the position of Android Developer?
I think that for any kind of developer the most important qualities are communication, determination, can-do attitude and open-mindedness. Like in every profession it’s crucial to put the work in to develop. Sounds incredibly cliche but it is a cliche for a reason 🙂.
5. What work-related event/project/achievement will stay in your memory for a long time?
What I’ve learned on every project I’ve worked on at Mood Up will stay in my memory but first of all I’ll always remember the great atmosphere and people I met there. While I was doing the research before I joined the team, someone in a comment section on one of the job sites wrote: “Mood Up is first of all people there” and I couldn’t agree more ;).
6. What do you like to do outside of work hours?
In my free time I simply try to put my mind at ease by spending time with my friends, going to the gym or playing and watching football. I also learn new technologies and try to keep an eye on new tech trends. Doesn’t sound too exciting, I even bored myself just writing about it 😀.
